Self-Portrait: 1965-2000 uses the media of photography and digital imaging to explore many social issues from the last third of the twentieth century. It is a self-discovery project that addresses issues such as interracial marriage, domestic violence, child abuse, teenage suicide, gays in the military, abortion, religion, same-sex marriages, identity issues, breast cancer, and AIDS. Over the last five years, I gathered materials from family, friends, and outside references, weaving together a photographic essay that chronicled my life and how the aforementioned issues affected it.

The project, in the form of an artist's book, consists of ninety-four images (including cover page) of original photographs, drawings, documents, letters, text, and digital enhancement, which combine into a functional calendar. This format was selected for its sense of intimacy and its ability to convey a story in a chronological fashion.

This artist's book is dedicated with love to Peggy Whitlow, for being my friend and my 'Mom,' Sheree Armstrong, for being the best little sister anyone could ask for, Larry Newton, for ceaselessly being the wind beneath my wings, and in memory of Bill Farmer, the one who walked in and out of my life too quickly.
