Portraits & Reflections

Comic books as icons of popular culture reflect truths about our society. In this body of work entitled Portraits & Reflections, comic book characters are superimposed on images of gay and lesbian couples in public places around the country, creating an ironic duality between "reality" and "fantasy."

The Portraits appropriate comical characters and are more playful. The Reflections are more political in nature and employ super heroes in the images. The humor and symbolism used are to encourage and empower the gay and lesbian community in its struggle for equality. To openly live a gay life and be true to oneself is to live a life of joy. With this freedom comes tremendous barriers and difficulties that are set before this community by the larger society.

The men and women portrayed in these series are some of the heroes in this country, showing courage and strength to overcome adversities. This ongoing work, begun in 1995, mirrors contemporary gay life and reveals truths about the lesbian and gay experience.
