This series got its title from a conversation with a professor who told me to "slow down and look back at my past work, and let the work guide me." That and the nature of the images gave it its title. This work is part of my earliest (started in October 1994) and focuses on gay and lesbian couples at various marches, festivals and celebrations of gay pride across the country. It chronicles, encourages and empowers the gay and lesbian community in its struggle for freedom and equality.
Covering Prides from Washington D.C. to Long Beach, from the newest parade in Waco to the established in Los Angeles, these images capture the affection and intimacy between couples. They also illuminate for viewers how similar many couples tend to be. This series is taken from behind and provides a sense of anonymity to the subjects, who represent a multitude of gays and lesbians in this country.
During these celebrations, gay men and women have the opportunity to feel comfortable being themselves in the open. Perhaps with more exposure these scenes will become more common and will help reduce homophobia.
